Every peace builder must possess and be able to use certain qualities. A good peace builder must be empathetic. Also, a good peace builder must be good with communication. A peace builder must know how to express him/herself by meaning what he says and saying what he means, expressing words to soothe the parties involved in the peace building process. There must also be respect which a peace builder must have and show to the different parties, treating people with respect has a way of bring down existing tension. A peace builder must not be judgmental, partial and must remain neutral. This means a good peace builder must not take sides or be for one party against the other, must not be swayed by the words or stories of one party at the expense of the other but rather, must be fair.

A good peace builder must be a sponge, ready to absorb information let out by the parties to peace building process and at the same time possess the ability to keep things confidential without divulging information shared in the peace building process.
